From cosmetics to oil and gas

- Mike Watson

A Taranaki woman who started her career in cosmetics and now works in the oil and gas industry is a finalist for a national business award.

Amelia Rentzios, who currently works for OMV as Maui production station plant manager, is one of three finalists for the Young Executive of the Year award at the Deloitte Business Awards, to be announced in December.

She is the only finalist from Taranaki and one of a handful from provincial New Zealand.

Rentzios, a chemical engineering graduate, has previously worked in the United States in the cosmetics industry and in the oil and gas industry in the Netherlands.

In her current role, Rentzios coordinates 20-50 contractors on average per week and is responsible for the safe delivery of the plant, execution of maintenance and project work and team development at the station, which provides a third of New Zealand’s natural gas needs.

Rentzios, 36, also started the Young Energy Professionals Network in Taranaki in 2018.

She said the energy transition was one of the most important social issues of today.

‘‘This is a period of energy revolution and I am excited to work for an industry that has a significant role to play in this.

‘‘I want to be part of the transition and have a voice in the change as it develops in New Zealand.

‘‘In establishing the network, I hope to make change by connecting the future leaders and experts in the energy industry, providing opportunities for us to address together the specific challenges we may face in the road to a net zero carbon future as well as the various scenarios that will get us there.’’

Rentzios previously worked for L’Oreal’s graduate programme in New York developing new products for the Maybelline brand, later becoming a production planner and scheduler.

She later joined the Shell graduate programme in the Netherlands, choosing production operations as a career path.

Rentzios became Shell Dutch senior operations team leader for its highest producing cluster of facilities, which included five gas processing facilities and 15 satellites facilities.

Rentzios is up against Genesis Energy’s executive general manager, retail markets, James Magill, and Datacom Group’s account director & enterprise portfolio manager, James David.

Award winners will be revealed at a gala event being held in Auckland on December 5.
