Goal setters all done

At the start of lockdown Jane Matthews spoke to four people about their lockdown goals. Here’s how they went.

In less than a month, Joshua Sullivan has smashed his way through 11 pairs of drum sticks, but the 8-year-old has also smashed his lockdown goals.

Joshua is one of the many people around Mt Taranaki who decided to use their four weeks stuck at home to work toward something.

Joshua planned to drum a new song each day and upload it to his Joshua Drummer Facebook page.

More than a month on and the Kaponga Primary School student has gone through more than 30 songs, started giving Facebook live ‘‘mini concerts’’ at the weekend and is picking up beats quicker than ever.

‘‘Some, he basically gets in one go,’’ dad David Sullivan, of Mangatoki, South Taranaki, said.

Justine Olckers set out to finish her second novel during lockdown.

She has finished it and has moved on to her third.

One book is a compilation of all the short stories and poems she has written, while the second is the next piece of her partpublished trilogy.

While Olckers admitted procrastination had got the better of her, she’s set another goal.

‘‘I’m going to use level three to get it done,’’ the mother of three, of Ha¯ wera, said.

When Jaide Whiteman’s competitive streak got the best of her, she couldn’t stop moving – she wanted to win the ‘‘Quaranteam’’ fitness challenge. The challenge required the New Plymouth woman to be active and keep her heart rate up more than the others taking part.

Even though she was improvising workouts in her garage using jack stands as weights and a chilly bin for squats, the mother of three ended up winning it.

‘‘I was stoked,’’ Whiteman said. ‘‘I’m just going to keep going.’’

Craig Hicks had planned to fill every day of lockdown with DIY projects, and that he did. His completed projects include 17 hours of waterblasting, building a bridge, and endless painting.

‘‘It’s been bloody good,’’ the Stratford man said. ‘‘It’s all the jobs that I’ve been looking at and not had time for.’’

Even after hurting his ankle – somehow – he kept going just with a ‘‘hobble’’.

‘‘If I could get some materials, another month would be good.’’
