member has a swipe card so it will be easy to contact trace, he said.

Tutaki Trust-run Stratford’s Lions Den Gym & Fitness centre also opens today, with contact-tracing forms to be filled out by members on arrival.

Trust chair Marcia Millard said hours had been cut from 6am to 8.30pm on weekdays and 8am to noon on Saturdays. It would be closed on Sundays. The number of people allowed at the gym had reduced to 30 for social distancing.

‘‘It’s been a week of preparation,’’ Millard said.

But it was more relaxed than at City Fitness, which sent an email to members saying it would reopen on Monday, with only 75 members allowed on-site at one time.

Members must book to go and take their own towels, are allowed on-site for only an hour and 15 minutes, and will be given disinfectant to clean equipment. Water fountains and showers are out of use, small multi-use equipment will be unavailable and the gym was no longer accessible after hours.

New Plymouth’s Snap Fitness would continue running 24/7 from 6am this morning and owner Neil White encouraged members to attend at non-peak times.

‘‘We will be encouraging people to spread their usage time to nonpeak so numbers in the gym make the guidelines possible,’’ he said.

The gym has 1000 members, all of whom were allowed to return, but White said the gym would seek medical clearance for those over the age of 70 and people with chronic medical conditions.

‘‘At this stage the feedback and inquiries I am having seem to be super positive and excited.’’
