We’re important too

-

About Kevin Hague’s comments re sacrificing nature for human convenience in the matter of the long-delayed Mt Messenger bypass ( TDN December 29) – we would still all be living in caves if humans had not done this over the centuries.

I am proud of my late brother, Don Charles Smith, for gifting his farm at Okato to the Taranaki Forest and Bird Association. He wanted the 40 acres of native bush on the farm preserved and had a Queen Elizabeth II covenant placed upon it. If Don was still on this earth he would say get on with building the darn road, Taranaki needs it.

In 2015 my husband’s right retina started detaching and we had to drive post haste to Waikato Hospital to have it fixed. As it was, by the time he was operated on it had detached 95 per cent. If the road had been blocked his sight would have gone in that eye.

Many Taranaki people must be in the same boat. Not all emergencies can be sent by air.

We need our road bettered as all goods and services from the North have to come that way.

I do wonder if it is because of our poor road that Tranzit buses make one trip north a week now and one trip back.

Otherwise, if one wants to go north one hops on a bus going south and goes to either Whanganui or Bulls and then up the middle of the North Island.

How ridiculous.

So no, I am not happy at having another bucket of guilt poured on my head.

I am sorry for the fauna and flora which will be disadvantaged but I think this time the need of humans comes first. We are important too. Heather Hodges, Stratford
