Girls’ High look to bounce back

- Will Johnston

New Plymouth Girls’ High School will look to bounce back from their large deficit against Inglewood in the opening round of Taranaki’s premier one netball competition.

The school side was beaten 70-18 in Stratford last week against Inglewood. Girls’ High did show some promise in the defending circle after being able to snatch some of Inglewood’s ball. That aspect will be an area they will want to build on. With a changing roster annually, it must be difficult for coach Leigh Laurence to develop consistent combinations across several seasons. In week two of the grading, Laurence’s side will play Naumai at the TSB Stadium tonight. Naumai lost to New Plymouth Old Boys 45-34.

Old Boys will play Tysons East at the TSB Stadium. Tysons East started the season well with a strong win against Stratford/Eltham. Inglewood play Stratford/Eltham at the TET Stadium in Stratford. Centre pass for all premier one matches is at 8.15pm.

In premier two, Tysons West, Inglewood and Raukura picked up wins in the opening round. Tomorrow, Raukura play Inglewood, Inglewood High School face-off with Tukapa and Tysons West play Sacred Heart Girls’ College. All matches are at the TSB Stadium.

In premier three, Bell Block Marist Dragons, Inglewood and Naumai were the winners after week one. This week, Bell Block and Ha¯wera High School square off at the TSB Stadium, Stratford/Eltham host The Locals and Inglewood play Naumai, also at the TSB.

Draws and results can be found on Netball Taranaki’s website.
