Todd employee wins energy award

A Todd Energy employee involved in work to reduce carbon emissions, and add value to Taranaki’s natural gas fields, has won a national energy excellence award.

Juliet Oliver was named as the 2021 Young Energy Profession­al of the Year at the New Zealand Energy Excellence Awards at a ceremony in Wellington on Wednesday.

Oliver, a production optimisati­on manager at Todd Energy in New Plymouth, is responsibl­e for implementi­ng a Todd-wide project to extract more value from the company’s natural gas fields without undertakin­g more drilling.

In an emailed statement she said it was privilege to win the award, as it also recognised Todd Energy’s dedication to create secure energy supplies for New Zealand.

‘‘For me, receiving this award and this recognitio­n shows that no matter where you are in the energy supply industry, you can have a positive impact on people, on the community and on the environmen­t.’’

The Auckland University chemical and material engineerin­g graduate has worked at Todd since 2014 where she also leads a project to reduce the company’s carbon emissions. Austrian-owned oil and gas exploratio­n company OMV NZ, and Canadian-owned methanol producers Methanex, both based in Taranaki, were also recognised at the awards night.

OMV NZ won the Network Initiative award for the repairs to the Pohokura natural gas pipeline.

Methanex picked up the Community Initiative award for strengthen­ing relationsh­ips with hapu¯ .

Venture Taranaki chief executive Justine Gilliland said the award was a timely reminder of the impact and positive outcomes the region has on the energy sector, and ensuring energy security across New Zealand.

‘‘These latest regional energy accolades confirm our region’s position as industry leaders, as we look to the future and energy innovation­s on the horizon, harnessing and leveraging our existing knowledge and capability,’’ Gilliland said in a statement.

‘‘Taranaki continues to excel in energy, and will continue to do so as we transition towards a lowemissio­ns future with bright minds and innovative and collaborat­ive organisati­ons leading the way.’’
