And so to bed, in style

- Joanne.butcher@stuff.co.nz

We spend a third of our lives in bed, they say. But I feel like I’ve been spending even more time than usual tucked under blankets this winter. The cold, dark mornings have made hibernation pretty appealing.

So, this month, we’re looking at what makes a bedroom a truly cosy nighttime sanctuary. Reporter Kylie Klein Nixon has been in search of the perfect Goldilocks bed setup – neither too firm nor too soft, nor so teeny a duvet that you’ll spend all night fighting for your share of it.

Designers recommend natural fibres for your bed linen, as well as two layers of duvets or blankets. But, in good news for those of us who can’t be bothered with rearranging rows and rows of cushions and bolsters, you don’t need an elaborate pillow setup to be on trend. Stop after a couple of plump Euro pillows, two in bold colours, and maybe the odd decorative cushion, and your bed can still look great.

Meanwhile, reporter Joanna Davis has been finding out how an interiors stylist designed a space for a client with her own creative vision. Angelique Armstrong translated personal stylist Tracy Ilton’s minimalist style into a smart and cohesive home – and saved her from the hassle of having to move house in the process. Find out more on page 19.

It’s no secret that the housing market is pretty tough at the moment, so last month, Homed launched a how-to series all about how to get on the ladder. This free, six-week email course is designed to help first timers navigate the highs, lows and pitfalls of the house-buying journey. If that’s you, or someone you know, then head to homed.co.nz/ first-homes to find out more, and sign up for our First Time Buyers’ Club.

As always, we’d love to see your own before and after home overhauls. Send us your photos to homed@stuff.co.nz. Have a great month, and here’s looking forward to spring!
