Lions Train repaired and running this weekend
The Lions Train is back on the tracks this weekend, and with a re-geared engine, it’s ready to roll.
Taupo Pateke Lions Club member Graham Mock said following repairs, the diesel train was running smoother than ever.
‘‘We’ve just installed a new hydraulic drive system, and it’s now direct-drive.’’
The 14 horsepower train has been doing circuits since 1981, although a new train was put on the tracks in 1992.
Nonetheless, the train experience will be remembered by generations of children, having run for 35 years, he said.
‘‘My great grandchild has been on it, as well as my grandchildren, and my children, so there’s definitely been three generations enjoying the train.’’
The train is run as a community fundraiser, with Taupo Pateke Lions Club operating the train and the Lakeland Lions Club owning the train, Mock said.
‘‘It’s $2 a trip for everybody, because we’re all kids at heart.’’
The train follows a 1200 metre around Tongario Domain.
