Singer’s celebrates career milestone

- BENN BATHGATE

‘‘To me, the most important thing of all is that your love for music should be your absolute driving force and passion.’’

Singer Lizzie Marvelly is set to celebrate a decade in the business with a special Rotorua concert on September 16.

Marvelly, who began her career in 2006, said the audience can expect an eclectic show when she performs at the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre.

‘‘I’m going to go right back to the beginning, so there will be a few songs from that first Knight with a Dame tour. I’ll then wind my way through the last 10 years, with songs from all three albums, right up to ‘Made For You’ (from the Born To Dance film) and beyond,’’ she said.

‘‘I’ll be performing a few songs that haven’t been recorded or released yet, and a few covers that I’ve performed at concerts over the years. The challenge will be bringing it all together, but I’m lucky to be working with some amazing musicians in my band, so I know they’ll provide a tapestry to weave all of the diverse songs into one colourful body of work.’’

Marvelly said the music business has changed considerably in the past 10 years.

‘‘Back in 2006 it was all happening so quickly for me that I barely thought a year down the track, let alone ten, so it that sense, it’s a nice surprise to find myself here 10 years later,’’ she said.

Marvelly said she has been lucky to work with some stellar names during her time, citing Sir Howard Morrison, Dame Malvina and Frankie Stevens as important early influences.

‘‘I have some wonderful recollections from those early years. Dame Malvina wearing a cowboy hat, playing an old honkytonk piano and yodelling in a tearoom one morning somewhere in the South Island. Frankie waking up early enough to call my room for a 4am wake-up call so I wouldn’t miss my very early flight the morning after a gig we were both on. And many special memories of Sir H.’’

She’s honest about the challenges the music industry poses too.

‘‘Music is now a nearimpossible game to play professionally. To me, the most important thing of all is that your love for music should be your absolute driving force and passion.’’
