- STEPH RANGI

Next week will be all on at Mt Ruapehu as Turoa ski field becomes the final pit stop for the New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour.

New Zealand’s top under 18 ski and snowboard talents will compete for the junior freeride title.

Entrants have already competed in two rounds, the first being in August in , Queesntown, with the second round at Mt Olympus, Craigieburn Range, Canterbury earlier this month.

The GoPro Junior Freeride competition at Turoa, will take place between September 23-26, with one competition day and three contingency weather days.

The athletes with the most points in each category after the completion of the three stop tour, will be crowned the Overall NZJFT champions.

‘‘This is a world-class event for young athletes, and attracts some of the best upcoming skiers and riders from around the country,’’ Turoa event coordinator, Bryan Cleaver, said.

‘‘Turoa is very fortunate to host the Freeride Tour as it’s such a great opportunity to showcase our country’s athletes in Turoa’s freeriding terrain.’’

The Tour was created in 2015 to provide New Zealand junior athletes with the opportunity to compete in professionally run freeride competitions. This event will award wild cards to the JFT World Championships in Andorra next year.
