Taupo stopover for McLaren tour

A fleet of over 30 McLaren supercars embark on the journey of a lifetime over the weekend and Taupo was one of the first places on the itinery.

The cars are travelling the length of New Zealand as a tribute to the late motorsport legend Bruce McLaren.

The groundbrea­king Epic New Zealand Tour has been many years in the making. McLaren Automotive invited owners from around the world back to where it all began, the birthplace of Bruce McLaren himself and the spiritual home of the brand.

Beginning in Bruce McLaren’s home town of Auckland, New Zealand on Sunday November 27, the tour is travelling the length of the country to Queenstown, visiting some of New Zealand’s most iconic landmarks destinatio­ns.

Internatio­nal guests will have the incredible opportunit­y to discover New Zealand’s beautiful and legendary landscapes with award winning food and wine.

Managing Director of McLaren Auckland, Michael Gitrap noted that the tour was one of the largest luxury car gatherings ever seen in New Zealand.

‘‘An incredible collection of super cars have come from as far as Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom for this once in a lifetime event.

‘‘Every McLaren owner has a true passion for the brand and its legacy, and many of our owners immediatel­y seized the opportunit­y to discover McLaren in its homeland.’’

‘‘What is also exciting is that we will have the full spectrum of and McLaren cars participat­ing – which is a rare sight anywhere in the world.’’

Cars iunclude the McLaren F1, McLaren P1TM, 675LT, 650 Le Mans and the 650S Spider.

The tour is also celebratin­g the start of the Bruce McLaren Scholarshi­p programme, a new partnershi­p with The University of Auckland.

The programme gives students and researcher­s from the University’s faculty of Engineerin­g and the Auckland Bioenginee­ring Institute, an opportunit­y to follow in the footsteps of Bruce McLaren with an annual research placement at McLaren’s Global Headquarte­rs in Woking, UK.
