Waterways back for 2017

Lakes and Waterways Action Group are beginning the year with an update from Waikato Regional Council’s Zone Manager Allan Kirk.

Kirk, who has a background in soil conservati­on, has been with the council for two years and is responsibl­e for ensuring Council’s flood protection, foreshore and catchment and river management works in the Taupo Zone are implemente­d.

Kirk will give an overview of Council’s work in the district as well as reporting on the past years’ specific works programme.

A major feature of last year’s flood protection and control works was the completion of the upgrade of the Te Herekiekie Street revetment in Turangi.

Another area of work involves protecting land accelerate­d erosion.

‘‘The multiple benefits achieved by fencing and planting areas such as our many smaller wetlands are a major considerat­ion when budgeting for new works’’ Kirk said.

2016 saw the opportunit­y for the Regional Council and specifical­ly members of the Lake Taupo Catchment Committee to draft up a Lake Taupo Zone Plan which Kirk will give an update on.
