Who will be NZ’s bomb king?

- MATT SHAND

Everyone says they can do the best bomb, but the debate will be settled once and for all this Waitangi Weekend in Taupo.

The NZ Bomb Competition is back and bigger than ever.

The madcap idea from local lad Matt Laity sees a giant scaffold built over the Wharewaka drop off.

Last year the event was held to see if building the scaffold structure was possible. It was, and thanks to new sponsors, Trev Terry Marine and ZM, Laity has upped his game.

He has brought in a big name judge to help crown the winner.

Hads Te Huia is the creator of popular bombing blog, Bomb Life New Zealand and has probably jumped off every high object into water in the North Island in his quest for the best bomb spot.

Te Huia said it will be hard to judge the competition but he is working out a system that will be fair.

‘‘We’re still sorting out how we will judge it but I imagine it will all be about style, splash size and technique,’’ he said.

‘‘Last year was a warm up but this year it is the real deal and we will have a bomb king and queen.’’

Te Huia said prospective bombers should look at getting in some practice ahead of the competition and recommended doing some manus or coffin drops as Bully Point as a place to start.

‘‘Those two jumps tend to make the biggest splash,’’ he said.

‘‘A lot of people don’t do the manu because there is a danger element but the coffin drop is quite safe.’’

The NZ Bomb Competition will take place at Wharewaka Point Waitangi Weekend, February 4 to 6
