Bike to work and win prizes

- ROBERT STEVEN

Ditching the car and riding a bike to work could have extra benefits in February - beyond feeling fitter and healthier.

This February, the NZ Transport Agency is running the Aotearoa Bike Challenge and they’re putting plenty of prizes up for grabs.

The aim of the month-long workplace challenge, which begins on February 1, is for Kiwis to record their bike travels over the month. Riders need only to take a 10-minute bike ride to enter.

So far, 3500 people have registered, as well as 515 organisations.

Makea Pokere from Les Mills Lambton Quay, said anyone wanting to get started can find tips and tricks online.

‘‘It’s great too for workplaces who are entering as teams to enjoy a bit of friendly competition,’’ he said.

‘‘Also as an employer, we know that for our team, when they are active this has widespread benefits for the workplace in terms of productivity and motivation.

Makea said it can be hard to build new habits.

‘‘We find that giving things a go – in this case just 10 minutes cycling, which you can fit in anytime, anywhere, and achieving that – can be a real motivator. Then it’s just a case of building on that and turning a 10-minute bike trip into a habit.’’
