Like skating? Try derby!

- MATT SHAND

Even Taupo’s best roller derby girls got a reminder of how tricky skating can be when they tried their hand at the pop-up ice rink.

After a few spills the Huka Dolls got a good reminder of what it is like trying out new skating techniques so they will be ready to teach this year’s new wave of recruits.

Recruiter Tabatha Farr said they will be hosting learn to skate sessions from February 19 and plan to keep hosting them every week on Sundays.

‘‘These events are for everyone to come along and see if they like skating and want to do more of it,’’ she said.

‘‘After that we have sessions for people over 18 years old to learn skills and the rules of derby.’’

Farr said twelve months ago she had never been on a pair of roller skates before but was able to play in her first derby match last season.

‘‘It’s something you can do as an individual just for you,’’ she said.

‘‘As a mum that is nice to do and it’s nice to still be able to master something at any age.

‘‘It is also a really good sport for helping people with body their body confidence.

‘‘It’s all about what your body can do and learning about it’s strength and power.’’

‘‘And having a really cool bunch of people around you helps that as well.’’
