Not too cold for ice cream

- STEPH RANGI

The middle of summer generally calls for the cool ice cream treat but on Friday with the icy winds rolling off the lake, it didn’t stop a group of children getting their creamy treat after doing a good deed.

Outside the gelato cart on Tongariro Street, a group of orange vested pre-schoolers from My Treehut Early Learning Centre, were strolling the lake front picking up litter.

As a thank-you, they were treated to a hokey pokey waffle ice cream complete with sprinkles from the gelato cart owners Victoria Kay and her husband.

‘‘It really just served as a way to teach them about respecting the lake and looking after Taupo,’’ Kay said. ‘‘And because we have the gelato cart we were able to treat them.’’

Kay and her husband took over the gelato cart, 3 Little Kiwis, in November last year. Kay’s children attend the early centre as well.

In total there were 30 children with one adult to two children out picking up litter, and they were aged between three years old and five years old.

They managed to full up three plastic bags.

A spokesperson from My Treehut Early Learning Centre said they do a little pick up every year but usually at the end of the year.

‘‘We will probably do it twice this year,’’ she said.
