Dangerous breeds look to be breed out in future

- MATT SHAND

‘‘It means these violent tendencies will eventually be bred out of the population’’

Dangerous breeds and menacing dogs will not be having any offspring with orders to get the snip issue from Taupo District Council.

Council received $15,000 from the Department of Internal Affairs as part of a nationwide subsidised neutering programme.

The funding will allow council to offer free neutering for dogs, as well as discounted registration and microchipping for menacing dogs not currently registered with council.

There are also five types of dogs automatically classed as menacing including the Brazilian fila, dogo Argentino, Japanese tosa, perro de presa canario and pit bulls. Dogs can also be classed as menacing for how they behave.

Turangi SPCA manager Stacy Lewis said the initiative should be applauded as it will help ease pressure on volunteer organisations.

‘‘It will mean dangerous dogs will not produce offspring which will not only reduce the number of dogs out there but increase our chance of rehoming animals when they come in,’’ she said.

‘‘It means these violent tendencies will eventually be bred out of the population.’’

Menacing dog owners who wish to have their dog neutered should contact council on 0800 ASK TDC (0800 275 832) or visit a council office.
