Local cafes welcoming breastfeeding in public
‘‘Who eats on the toilet?’’
Feeling nervous and embarrassed about breastfeeding in public is a problem many new mums face.
But now, breastfeeding mothers are appreciating warm welcomes from local cafes and restaurants who are displaying breastfeeding friendly stickers in their front windows.
‘‘We know that breastfeeding is an important public health issue, but many mums struggle to reach their own breastfeeding goals,’’ Local La Leche Leader, Kristina Maconaghie, said.
‘‘One barrier is feeling unsure of what to do when out and about. Our community can support mums and babies by accepting breastfeeding as a normal part of daily life and making it clear that breastfeeding is welcome whenever and wherever .’’
Cafe owner Nikki Pennefather proudly displays a sticker on the front door at Spoon and Paddle and said they strive to make everyone feel at home.
‘‘As young parents ourselves we know how awkward it sometimes feels to have to go feed in the bathroom. Who eats on the toilet?’’ she said.
Local Mum Anna welcomes the signs.
‘‘The window stickers are great as I don’t feel I have to ask for permission. I feel supported to do what feels natural for my baby and I,’’ she said.
Cafes and restaurants are encouraged to be part of the campaign. Stickers are available from La Leche League Taupo . Elwarth
