Rugby League teams need help

-

Dambusters Rugby League formed in the 1970s and since then they have gone through a lot of ups and downs.

They are a club dedicated to helping the young ones further their rugby league career but they are in desperate need of help.

Turangi’s Dambusters Rugby League have 60 kids keen to take on rugby league for another year.

But what the club doesn’t have, are enough coaches and managers to cover the four Mini Mod teams.

‘‘We have lots of interested parents and grandparents but none are able to dedicate to coaching,’’ Dambusters Rugby League treasurer, Virginia Church, said.

Dambusters Rugby League formed in the 1970s and since then they have gone through a lot of ups and downs.

Just three years ago, the club were $15,000 in debt and only had one junior team.

But last year they managed two teams, as well as joining an under 11 grade team with the Reporoa Razorback Club.

The start of 2017 saw the club’s debt reduced to $3000 and with high aims of having four league teams - an under 7s, under 9s, under 11s.

‘‘We are also hoping to start up an under 5s team if we can get the players, a coach and a manager,’’ Church said.

Church said the struggle with finding coaches and managers was due to the fact that, previously, they would have had to travel to do a coaches course.

‘‘Now you can get lots of that done online,’’ Church said.

‘‘And also, they come to you now.’’

Last season for the club was a step up as they played against some of the top teams from Putaruru, Tokoroa, and Taupo.

While joining the under 11s team with Reporoa, both teams should have their own team this year.

Coaching one of the teams would involve two training evenings a week, with games on a Sunday.

There will also be some travelling involved.

The manager would be responsible for looking after the gear and also getting the kids to watch all their gear as well, along with helping the coaches out at practices.

With this season already looking bright, Church hopes some people will step up to help the kids.

‘‘Its all about getting the kids out and about and not getting themselves into trouble,’’ Church said.
