Challenging Hetet Shield

- STEPH RANGI

Despite being top of the points table last year, Taupo Sports A didn’t manage to successfully challenge the Hetet Shield in Te Kuiti.

This year, they are more than ready to bring it home.

This Saturday, Taupo Sports A will be facing off against Waitete and coach Henare Leach, said there is more riding on the game than last year.

‘‘We went up and challenged it last year. At that time we were the top team,’’ he said.

‘‘We felt pretty confident. But we failed to bring it home.

‘‘It probably means a lot more than last year.’’

The game plan for the team is just to give it their all.

‘‘We are just going to go and give it to them,’’ Leach said.

‘‘We are going to play our hardest.’’

Despite a shaky couple of games, Taupo Sports A are once again top of the table and hopes are high they will stay there while also bringing home the shield.

The last time the Taupo team held the shield was back in 2015 when they won against the Taumarunui Eels.

But their first – and only loss – saw them lose the shield.

Each team will play for the Hetet Shield and the only way to get the team name on it is to still have it at the end of the season.

Waitete has the biggest record when it comes to the Hetet Shield but all that may change on Saturday.

‘‘We went up and challenged it last year. We felt pretty confident. But we failed to bring it home.’’ Henare Leach.
