Local mothers form equestrian group

- STEPH RANGI

Two mothers have started a equestrian group in Taupo so that their daughters can enjoy the offpeak season without having to travel.

During the peak equestrian event season, the daughters of Lisa Wilson and Sally Parker are all go, competing in regional events all over the country.

But they are finding, when it came to the off season, they were still having to travel away for low key events.

So Parker and Wilson had an idea.

‘‘We just had the idea to bring some low key events locally,’’ Parker said.

‘‘We were having to travel so we decided to try and create something in Taupo.’’

5 Daughters Equestrian Group was formed in May by the two mothers. Wilson has three daughters and Parker has two.

All five girls have been involved in ESNZ Equestrian Sport and RAS and have had success at national level, winning titles in their different equestrian disciplines.

‘‘Now the girls feel, during their off season, it’s time to give back to our local community and share the knowledge they have gained,’’ Parker said.

So far, 5 Daughters Equestrian has held two events with more planned in coming months.

All of the events are open to riders of all ages and skill levels with show hunter days, show jumping days, and gear days.

Parker said they will also be looking for top level riders to come and do lessons and they also have a seminar planned with senior judges who will talk about show hunter days.

Parker said they welcome anyone with ideas or advice on what they would like to see happen or what type of events they’d like to have.

The next event the group has planned will be on July 11 and includes a second hand gear sale.

‘‘It’s just where people bring in their horse stuff they don’t use and on-sell it,’’ Parker said.

Following that - on June 23-24 they are hosting a two-day Show Hunting series.

Most events organised by the 5 Daughters Equestrian Group will be held at The National Equestrian Centre.

Those interested in the group can contact them on their Facebook page or email Parker on nigsal@xtra.co.nz
