Stepping up to a new challenge

- TAMARA THORN

St Patrick’s Catholic School’s new Principal says it is all about the children.

Angela Edhouse started her new job last term. She was the deputy principal before that.

Edhouse said she was up for an ‘‘exciting new challenge’’ but never thought she would be sitting in the principal’s chair.

She was acting principal for 3-4 weeks while the process to find a new principal was underway at the start of the year.

It was soon after Edhouse went thorough the process she was appointed permanent position.

She said she was not quite sure what she was in for when she took the job, but being deputy for the past three years had its advantages. She knows the community she is working in and the students.

‘‘I am not trying to find my way in a new town which is a positive,’’ she said.

Edhouse said she is getting her head around the job and adapting to the new environment. She is excited about the new journey and challenges ahead.

As Principal Edhouse wants to focus on building on the strengths the school already has. She will also review the teaching and learning environment.

She said she is looking forward to working with the children and providing opportunities. She wants students to be aware that they have an important role to play.

‘‘They will be problem solvers and risk takers of the future.’’

Edhouse said she wants to work on developing a curriculum that responds to the needs of all students, and making a difference to learning, and providing the opportunity that engages learners.

‘‘It has always been about the kids,’’ she said.

Edhouse said she has a supportive Board of Trustees and Parish. Passionate staff have made the transition from deputy principal to principal ’’that much easier’’.

’’This is a special school and the time felt right to make the move into principalship.’’

She said it was all about making a difference for the children, working alongside teachers and catering to the needs of students.

‘‘Every day is different which is quite exciting and keeps you on your toes,’’ she said.

‘‘It is going to be an exciting adventure.’’
