- TAUPO¯ TIMES We’d heard... We ordered... The service... The vibe...

A taste of... Lakehouse Taupo, 10 Roberts Street.

The Monday night $20 stone grill steak deal was a fun way to dine

Garlic bread ($9.90), 200g stone grill steak with creamy mashed potato, seasoned vegetables and mushroom sauce ($20.00) and 200g stone grill steak with chips and salad.

We started off with garlic bread (as the go to starter, I’m sure). It was nice doughy bread, soft inside and nice crunchy outer. It was a little light on the garlic butter. The bread came out 10 minutes after we ordered.

The stone grill steak looked small but looks can be deceiving especially with the sides. The steak was a good cut of sirloin and really hit the spot. Being able to cook it yourself as you ate it was a fun way to eat. You can’t moan about a steak that you cooked yourself.

The creamy mashed potato was nice but a little bland. The seasonal vegetables were a bit of a surprise. I was expecting carrots and something green but instead got roasted beetroot, red onion and carrots. Although they weren’t expected, they were very nicely seasoned and roasted.

The fries were nicely battered, hot and had a good crunch to it while the salad was good too, not skimpy on vegetables but could have done with cheese (everything could do with a slice of cheese in my opinion though).

With two mains of steak coming with two sides each and with a craft beer, $40.00 would make for a cheap, enjoyable date night.

The front of house staff were very friendly and welcoming. Our starter was out within 10 minutes of ordering and our main was there ready to eat as soon as the starter dishes were cleared away. We were in, fed and out within half an hour.

It had a little bit of a draft in the restaurant to start off with but once the stone grills came out the draft was welcoming. The tables gave a rustic feeling, while the music was lively.

If you go... We recommend trying out the $20.00 stone grill deal but, unless you have a big appetite, we recommend not getting a starter - the steak was filling enough. Make sure to wear something light as the heat from the stone grill has you hot in minutes.
