Floral carpet to be unveiled

- ROBERT STEVEN

‘‘It'll be as colourful as a painting, and will have rhythm and movement flowing through it.’’ Elaine Brighouse

More than 500 flowers descend on St Andrew’s Church today, as volunteers prepare to create a 9-metre floral carpet down the centre isle.

Once completed, the carpet will be on display on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Convenor Elaine Brighouse said flowers like roses, carnations and Christmas lilies would all feature in the carpet.

‘‘It’ll be as colourful as a painting, and will have rhythm and movement flowing through it. Different parts will be raised and the different textures and colours will contrast.

Following a ‘‘New Zealand Christmas’’ theme, the carpet will have plenty of greenery, as well as colourful flowers.

‘‘People have been collecting cones and flax for weeks.’’

The layout had been planned on a 9-metre roll of newsprint, she said.

Brighouse said she had once seen a spectacular floral carpet at Christchurch Cathedral, but had never thought she’d ever do one in Taupo¯ .

‘‘I thought it’d be too much work! It’s going to be a big undertaking,’’ she said.

Around 18 volunteers will be constructing the floral carpet – placing stems and leaves in Oasis staging foam.

‘‘We couldn’t do it without the helpers – they’re all from all sorts of different denominations, but they all love working with greenery and nice flowers.

‘‘We can’t do the whole thing on the floor, because we’d get sore knees We’ll do it on tables, then complete it on the floor.’’

Brighouse said visitors might be surprised by the creativity of the carpet.

‘‘But I won’t tell you what those are yet; you’ll have to come see,’’ she told the Taupo¯ Times.

· The Floral carpet will be unveiled at St Andrew’s Church, 91 Titiraupenga St on Friday Nov 10, with a Cocktail Party. Canapes, refreshments, jazz band and dancing. Tickets $50 from Flirts Fashions, 15 Heu Heu St.
