Review of Taupo¯ cafe: Kefi at the Hub

- We’d heard… We ordered… The service… The vibe...

STEPH RANGI A taste of…

Kefi at the Hub, 415 Huka Falls Road, Wairakei. It was a well priced place to go as a family and the food was delicious.

Kids pancakes and french toast ($12 each), pancakes with banana, bacon and maple syrup ($19) and poached eggs on ciabatta ($9) plus added bacon and home made hash browns.

The pancakes were light and fluffy. The banana was very tasty and complemented the dish very well. They were very generous with the bacon so for bacon lovers, it would be a dream. The french toast was also light and fluffy – it was gone within seconds of the plate being put in front of the 5 year old who wanted it. Both children finished their breakfasts with no complaints.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the bacon and eggs dish. While the eggs were poached perfectly and the bacon was delicious, the dish had two sauces on it that weren’t wanted. While it made the plate look fancy, they didn’t really work well with the dish and just made the bread soggy. The hash browns were nice enough but left a strong onion taste in the mouth.

the server was very friendly and even made the time to make the children’s fluffys decorative. Within 10 minutes of ordering, we were eating – which is great if you have ‘‘hangry’’ children.

When we arrived it was early morning so the cafe was still a little cold but the lit fireplace did give off a vibe of warmth. It was empty when we first got there but after being there for a short while, the place started to fill up, giving the ‘normal’ cafe vibe, without being too noisy. If you go… Make sure you have time to check out the helicopter next to the cafe if you go with children – they will love it.
