airport: A staged approach to develop the airport and surrounding commercial precinct to accommodate projected rising visitor numbers. 2. Civic precinct: Potential projects to reconnect the town centre with the river and lakefront include developing a lakefront cafe´ area and improving Tongariro Domain’s layout 3. Tertiary hub: Attracting tertiary-level training providers to improve Taupo¯’s knowledge economy. Suggested topic areas include Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), tourism, iwi-based enterprise and geothermal activity. The project will increase local education opportunities. 4. Geothermal industry: To promote Taupo¯ as a centre for industrial applications and research of geothermal energy. As part of the Bay of Connections Energy Strategy, businesses with potential industrial applications of geothermal energy are being approached, such as the forestry sector. Partners for a research facility are also being explored. Increased investment will bring high income jobs to the district.
5. Wairakei Tourism Park: Create an adventure precinct by connecting existing and new operators in the area. Linking the operators together will help to promote the location as a strong tourist destination.
6. T2T Cycle Trail: The 57km Turangi to Taupo¯ shared-use cycle and walking trail will increase domestic and international visitors, creating business opportunities for communities in Waitahanui, Motutere, Waitekoko and Motuoapa.
