air­port: A staged ap­proach to de­velop the air­port and sur­round­ing com­mer­cial precinct to ac­com­mo­date pro­jected ris­ing vis­i­tor num­bers. 2. Civic precinct: Po­ten­tial projects to re­con­nect the town cen­tre with the river and lake­front in­clude de­vel­op­ing a lake­front cafe´ area and im­prov­ing Ton­gariro Do­main’s lay­out 3. Ter­tiary hub: At­tract­ing ter­tiary-level train­ing providers to im­prove Taupo¯’s knowl­edge econ­omy. Sug­gested topic ar­eas in­clude Sci­ence, Tech­nol­ogy, En­gi­neer­ing and Maths (STEM), tourism, iwi-based en­ter­prise and geo­ther­mal ac­tiv­ity. The project will in­crease lo­cal ed­u­ca­tion op­por­tu­ni­ties. 4. Geo­ther­mal in­dus­try: To pro­mote Taupo¯ as a cen­tre for in­dus­trial ap­pli­ca­tions and re­search of geo­ther­mal en­ergy. As part of the Bay of Con­nec­tions En­ergy Strat­egy, busi­nesses with po­ten­tial in­dus­trial ap­pli­ca­tions of geo­ther­mal en­ergy are be­ing ap­proached, such as the forestry sec­tor. Part­ners for a re­search fa­cil­ity are also be­ing ex­plored. In­creased in­vest­ment will bring high in­come jobs to the district.

5. Wairakei Tourism Park: Create an ad­ven­ture precinct by con­nect­ing ex­ist­ing and new op­er­a­tors in the area. Link­ing the op­er­a­tors to­gether will help to pro­mote the lo­ca­tion as a strong tourist des­ti­na­tion.

6. T2T Cy­cle Trail: The 57km Tu­rangi to Taupo¯ shared-use cy­cle and walk­ing trail will in­crease do­mes­tic and in­ter­na­tional vis­i­tors, cre­at­ing busi­ness op­por­tu­ni­ties for com­mu­ni­ties in Waita­hanui, Mo­tutere, Waitekoko and Mo­tuoapa.
