Careers roadshow retains locals
Retaining school leavers in the Taupo¯ district and encouraging employers to recruit locally is the focus of the upcoming Taupo¯ District Careers Roadshow.
The roadshow is put together by Taupo¯ Pathways and it’s a chance for employers and tertiary training organisations to showcase a range of opportunities to young people. It also gives local employers the chance to get acquainted with potential employees.
Taupo¯ Pathways trustee Gaeleen Wilkie says there is a perception among school leavers that they need to go out of town for tertiary training and also a perception among some employers that they will have to recruit new employees outside of the district.
“It is Taupo¯ Pathways’ mission to link employers and tertiary training providers with school leavers. We want to combat the attitude ‘that there is no work here’, or ‘we won’t be able to fill this position with a local person’,” explains Gaeleen.
The careers roadshow links in nicely with the Gateways student Roadshow will be held at the Great Lake Centre on Tuesday June 19 from 9am to 5.30pm. It’s free for anyone, and buses will transport high school students thanks to Taupo¯ District Council. There will be representatives from 35 tertiary institutions and 20 local employers who make a up a good representation of the six main vocational pathways.
Gaeleen says particular mention should be made of Cheal Consultants and Countdown who have been avid supporters and sponsors. She says that the exhibitors always make a big effort to provide a fun and interactive experience.
“This year Stu Martin Joinery is bringing a kitchen which they are going to assemble on site, there will be a forestry tree-cutting simulator, the Mike Pero Careers Coach is always a big hit and there will be a chance to get your hair done by a student from the Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology.”
