MONDAY WALKERS REPORT

-

Last Monday’s walk was along the Waitahanui River bank where the river was running fast and high.

While there was some erosion of the bank they were lined with healthy looking flaxes, some bulrushes and the water was beautifully clear. We didn’t have to go far before we were walking over a soft carpet of conifer cones, admiring a stand of tall old ka¯nuka, and listening to a family of whiteheads having a domestic. Along with the local flora we noticed quite a few domestic interlopers — cotoneasters, flowering cherries and a smothering plant which we decided was honeysuckle. Our favourite spot was out of bounds because metal workers were cutting off the access bridge to take away for repair. The accidental change of venue resulted in a chance meeting with a fisherman who had caught two beautiful trout, just reward for his early morning rising. How fortunate we have these places to explore right on our doorstep. Next week’s walk starts at Arataki Rd. Phone Betty on 378 4992 or 027 592 2994 for more information.
