Taupo¯ Pakeke club producing Lion traps

- Bevan Choat

The Lions Club of Taupo¯ Pakeke recently received a special Lions District award for their club efforts towards conservation, one of the key thrusts of Lions International.

Members of the club under the direction and guidance of president Ian Triscott construct predator traps for Predator Free Taupo¯, an organisation involved in Greening Taupo with the view to making the district predator free.

Once the traps are constructed by the Pakeke Club members they are passed over to Robyn Ellis the coordinator of Predator Free Taupo¯ and areas are selected where the traps are set.

The Pakeke Club has so far manufactured more than 100 traps and all have been used.

When traps become damaged, they are then returned to the Taupo¯ Pakeke Lions Club for members to repair, while at the same time new traps are constructed for conservation use.

Lions District 202L was quick to acknowledge the voluntary work being carried out by the members of Pakeke and recently made an award to the club as the 'outstanding' club within District 202L over the threemonth period.

Vice District Governor Suez Reid made a special trip to Taupo¯ to present a trophy to the club for outstanding service to the community of Taupo¯ in the field of conservation.

The trophy was presented last week at a special afternoon tea.

Members continue to work hard for the local community and always welcome new community minded people to join their ranks.
