Te Awamutu team ousted from Chatham Cup contest

Te Awamutu exited in the first round of the nationwide Chatham Cup football competitio­n — going down 4-2 to Ellerslie which plays in Northern Region Football League division 1.

Coach Joe Gifford reports that his team battled well against their higher ranked opponents to trail 1-0 at halftime.

Steffan Foulkes scored an equaliser before Ellerslie took the game by the scruff of the neck, scoring three further goals to put the result beyond doubt.

Jack Connor had the final say for Te Awamutu, scoring with a spectacula­r long range shot.

This Saturday the team returns to WaiBOP premier league action with a game at the Stadium against Tauranga Blue Rovers, 2.45pm kick off.

The Edmonds Judd men’s reserve team were on the wrong end of a goal feast at Gower Park on Friday night, losing 7-5 to Melville.

Down 5-1 at one stage, Te Awamutu never gave up and pushed on to get a result right to the bitter end. Waikato Ball (2), Aaron Mills (2) and Campbell Black scored for Te Awamutu.

Player of the day was awarded to goalie Josh Petersen.

The Men’s Reserve team play Te Aroha A at noon at the Stadium in the Knockout Cup.

The men’s C division team lost 3-0 to Unicol Red at the Stadium on Saturday.

Gabe Hoete in central defence was consistent­ly one of the best players on the field.

Player of the day went to goalie Christian Chesswas who is growing with confidence after every game at senior level.

The Men’s C Division team play St Paul’s Corinthian­s at Anchor Park at 2pm in the Knockout Plate first round.

The women’s team improved throughout the game to beat Claudeland­s Rovers 3-0 at the Stadium on Sunday.

Coach Jono O’Sullivan was pleased with his team’s second half performanc­e after a messy first half.

Sam Kietzman (2) and Deijhana Adams were the goal scorers.
