Alma Goodwin won a closely-contested women’s two-ball bestball tournament with 43 stableford at Stewart Alexander Golf Club.

The Te Awamutu pairing took out the CHT Highfieldsponsored event by one point from Denise Goile and Leigh Grylls who claimed the runners-up spot on a countback after three teams emerged with 42 stableford. Helen Baynes and Sharyn Hancock had to settle for third, with fourth going to Carol Garside and Jan Dawson.

Fifth were Donna Hewitt and Margaret Mitchell with 41 stableford.

Stewart Alexander’s Dawn King and Bev Roigard took out the nine hole division with 23 stableford, from Jocelyn Jeffries/Shirley Woolly 21, Angie Way/Barbara Dench, 20.

The Stewart Alexander division two men’s pennant team of Aaron Vanderpoel, Herewini Hohepa, Jeremy Collett, Aaron Kelly, Shayne Ashford and Ian Berry have a chance to create history when they play Thames at Lochiel this weekend.

Should they win, it will be the first time the club has competed in the first division since the Waikato-wide pennant competition was introduced.

Also in the finals is the handicap match play team of Carl Miezenbeek, Jacob Carey, Phil Lambert, Phil Blundell, Denny Nunn and Jason Kraayvanger. They play off at Tairua against the Narrows.

Victory would cap off a great week for Nunn after he and wife Alice welcomed their first child, a daughter.
