SA pennant team settle for second

-

Stewart Alexander’s division two men’s pennant golf team stumbled at the last hurdle in their quest to gain promotion to Waikato division one ranks.

Thames triumphed 6-3 over Stewart Alexander in the final at Lochiel after getting off to the perfect start winning the morning foursomes 3-0.

The result was sealed when Thames’ number three Hayden Thomas finished off his opponent Aaron Kelly to give his team an unassailable lead.

The beaten finalists fared better in the singles with Shayne Ashford and Herewini Hohepa winning their matches and Jeremy Collett and Arron Van der Poel securing halves. Collett was three down with four to play but fought back for a well earned half.

Stewart Alexander’s handicap pennant team won their final against Tairua 6-3 at the Narrows.

The newly-crowned champions were up 3-0 after the foursomes and with Denny Nunn, Phil Lambert and Jacob Carey winning their singles, captain Carl Miezenbeek was able to hoist the trophy in triumph.

On the club scene, Sunday’s Devoy Signs sponsored scramble was won by Keith Mitchell with 43 stableford points, from Alec Cruickshank, Paul Makuch, Bruce Watkinson, Jacob Carey, Ian Coleman and Bobby Rollinson all on 39.

Carl Miezenbeek took out the gross on 74.

The NEC Jackpot was not struck and is now worth $99.

This Sunday sees the start of championship match play.
