Five days of bookworm’s treasures at annual sale

- BY BETHANY ROLSTON

Bookworms rejoice — the annual Te Awamutu Rotary Book Fair returns next week.

Since April Rotary members and volunteers have spent countless hours sorting through thousands of books, magazines, DVDs, CDs and vinyl records.

The items are stacked on shelves and tables, ready for doors to open to the public on Tuesday.

This year the book fair is in the former Betta Electrical building at 54 Sloane St from June 5-9.

“We’re over the moon to have this location,” says book fair coordinator Laurel Smith. “It’s a prime site.”

The book fair aims to be affordable, with most books sold for $1 to $5.

You can buy five children’s books for $1 and on Saturday you can fill a box of books for $10.

Laurel said there would be something to suit every taste and interest.

“You just never know from one year to the next what’s going to tick the boxes for people — what will prove to be popular.”

For the last 10 years the book fair has been an annual fundraiser for Te Awamutu Rotary.

The club supports many Rotary International projects and local community and youth programmes and events.

It aims to serve the Te Awamutu community and have fun in the process.

Club members have been instrumental in forming and building the Pirongia Forest Park Lodge, sponsoring the Te Awamutu Health shuttle and sponsoring the Te Awamutu Schools’ Attendance Officer vehicle.

The club also offers annual scholarships for second-year fulltime students at Waikato University.

This year money will again go back to the community — so head along to support the cause.

Unsold items from the book fair are offered to Waikeria Prison, Spring Hill Corrections Facility, the O¯ torohanga Rotary Book Fair and the children’s ward at Waikato Hospital.

“We try to give as much back to the community as possible.”

Te Awamutu Rotary Book fair: Tuesday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Saturday 10am-2pm.
