Outstanding games from young players

-

Te Awamutu Firehawks Rugby League Under 9 had two outstanding games on Saturday at Hopuhopu to open their season.

Every player, from a supporter’s point of view, was brilliant with tries being scored, tackles made and the cheering and positive support from the sideline proved a success.

The senior team travelled to Hamilton’s Mahoe Reserve and played Hukanui and got a wake-up call in rugby league.

Firehawks trailed for most of the game and at halftime trailed 4-14.

The end result was 26-24 to Firehawks.

Coach Victor Heke was pleased with the commitment and resilience of his young and not so experienced players and made special mention to the leadership of his senior players Taawhiri Howell, Ronnie Adams and Richard Heke for holding it together and leading the team for the duration.

Sunday held a great game with the Firehawks Under 15s against

Tu¯ rangawaewae at Paterson Park in Nga¯ ruawa¯ hia. There was courage and determination from such a young group in their first outing. They trailed early in the game and hit the lead early in the second half.

The coaches asked for a big effort defensively and despite not getting the winning result, all the supporters and coaching staff walked away from the field proud of the effort.

This team is still looking for more players. On Sunday it only had 15 players and with an injury midway through the first half played most of the game with only one replacement.

If there is anyone in this age group keen to give rugby league a go, head along and join Firehawks to be part of the great journey.

Te Awamutu host the Under 15 games this Sunday at Albert Park starting at 10am with TA Firehawks Under 15s playing at 12pm.
