Fibre creatives share work

Pop-up shop at Enrich+ Art Centre & Gallery

- Jesse Wood

The Te Awamutu Creative Fibre Group is looking forward to selling items produced by members at its pop-up shop next week. The group has about 30 members who explore, inspire and create with fibre.

The pop-up shop is a combination of members’ work using both natural and man-made fibres in many different ways for useful garments or art.

It will be a great opportunity to stock up on s winter woollies, or something for mum, and see the talents of spinning, weaving, knitting and felting encouraged in the group.

Hosted at the Enrich+ Art Centre & Gallery on Teasdale St, the shop will open for a week, Monday to Thursday, 9.30am to 4pm, and 9.30am to 2pm on Friday.

“We are very fortunate to be displaying items in the Enrich+ building, a wonderful gallery so close to the centre of Te Awamutu,” Te Awamutu Creative Fibre Group secretary and treasurer Kathy Mitchell said.

“It’s a space where an exhibition can be set up and remain for a week, at least, and members can be on hand to demonstrate or answer questions.”

The group encourages new members to share their stories and learn or revise skills.

The group meets weekly on the first and third Tuesday of the month from 9.30am to 1.30pm; second Tuesday 6.30pm to 9pm (weaving) and fourth Thursday, 6.30pm to 9pm in the fellowship room at Te Awamutu Baptist Church.

“We have an extensive library, a range of equipment for use with fibre, regular workshops in all areas of our interests and run exhibitions and popup shops,” Mitchell said.

“We are affiliated to Waikato Creative Fibre and Creative Fibre New Zealand. Groups from Coromandel to Taumaranui make up our area providing a regular newsletter, education grants and opportunities to exhibit and display our art and craft at another level. Tutors share knowledge and skills in all forms of fibre crafts spinning weaving, dyeing, felting, knitting, crochet and alike.”
