Greatest Show demonstrates school’s talents

-

Last week 20 students from Te Puke High School treated their friends, wha¯nau and support team to The Greatest Show, a selection of dances and short skits celebrating their abilities and talents.

Narrators Anthony and Katelin lead us through the series of acts with confidence and charisma. Anthony shared his journey of living with a hearing impairment. His resilience is admirable.

Sheldon showed off motocross skills and Daniel re-enacted his bravery aboard the Spirit of New Zealand.

The talented Braxton did not miss a beat on the drums.

Luke demonstrated his independence at his new role at the Daily Cafe´ while Paige, Angelina, Keita and friends showed us the importance of caring for one another.

It was great to see all the boys nailing their strongman choreography to Come Alive from the movie The Greatest Showman.

But the highlight was artist Rossalee, supported by ballerina Caitlyn Hopping, completing an illustration on stage that was later auctioned, raising over $300.

While Rossalee drew and Caitlyn danced, the audience was moved to tears.

The final montage of individual photographs in a vintage circus theme and the students’ signs declaring their personal value and character was heart-warming.

Creative director Michelle Cliff had the vision to showcase the talents of the individuals in Te Ringa Awhina, Te Puke High School’s Special Education Unit.

Witnessing these blossoming young adults supported by a caring and efficient team was moving. There was an absolute joy and honesty in the performance. After the show one student said she was proud of herself and her friends.

This show was perfectly imperfect.

In the pitch black theatre all the audience saw was 20 young adults with different abilities. Any preconception of disability was stripped away. It was the little unscripted moments that held the magic of this show. The students helped each other overcome their fears and sharing with us the audience, a glimpse into their hearts and minds.

Students, staff, friends and families of the students at Te Ringa Awhina, we tip our hats to you and say “bravo”.

We are the lucky ones to have these super-powered people in our community and to be treated to such an outstanding performance.

The Greatest Show will be performed again at Te Puke High School twice next week.
