Veteran stars as Te Puke win in run fest

-

Flying Mullet Te Puke won a high scoring contest with Holland Beckett Law Tauranga Boys College, in the Versatile Tauranga Williams Cup on Saturday.

Te Puke posted the highest score of the day, with 297 for the loss of nine wickets. Te Puke veteran Tai Bridgman-raison was in top form belting 87, with Blair Mckenzie reaching the half-century mark before dismissal.

Tauranga Boys’ opening batsman Ben Vyver made his team intentions clear of having a good shot of chasing down the very big target.

Vyver smacked 110 off just 81 balls, before being caught by Blair Mckenzie of the bowling of Tasman Carsons — with his big score eventually in vain, as Tauranga Boys’ were bowled out for 233.

Generation Homes Lake Taupo moved into the top four, with a comprehensive victory over Pa¯pa¯moa at Owen Delany Park in Taupo. Batting first, the home side reached 245/7 in their fifty overs, with Caleb Bate, leading the charge with 103 runs.

A half-century from George Moore, was the best of the Papamoa reply, which ended in the fortieth over with just 155 runs in the scorebook.

The penultimate Reserve Grade First Round games that will decide the top six who will square off to decide the 2021 Western Bay of Plenty Reserve Grade Championship, has set up a sudden death contest to find the sixth qualifier next weekend.

After stumps were drawn on Saturday evening, next Saturday’s last qualifying round encounter between Greerton Kings and Pa¯pa¯moa had become a winner takes all contest — with the prize at stake being a berth in the Reserve Grade championship rounds.

Saturday’s Reserve action saw Cadets post 204/9 and then bowl Te Puke out for 134, while Pa¯ pa¯ moa were dismissed for a very modest 85 runs with Mount Maunganui cruising to a 10 wicket victory.
