Kerikeri High wins lighting design award
Kerikeri High School has scooped three excellence awards for their staging of ‘H.U.M.4.N’ at this year’s regional heat of the nationwide Stage Challenge competition.
The school, one of six schools contesting the Northland spot, won the lighting design award and was placed third in both the choreography and performance skill categories at Forum North in Whangarei on June 24.
Aimed at encouraging youthful creative talents to portray social, political or community concepts the performing arts competition first began in 1993. Around 16,000 students from 200 schools took part this year.
Bream Bay College’s winning performance at this year’s Northland heat of Stage Challenge was on the subject of rape. The college’s
beat off five other schools including defending champions Dargaville High School .
The performance unveiled the fact that while all survivors of rape have a story to tell, society still wears a mask of ignorance on the subject.
Bream Bay’s message was clear ‘survivors deserve to be heard, to stop feeling ashamed and instead feel empowered, knowing that, society will remove their masks and believe them.’

Last year’s winner Dargaville High School won the excellence awards for school community and student leadership.
‘‘Northland put on a fantastic night at Forum North in Whangarei where all the schools showcased their creativity and innovation,’’ event manager Hazel Reid says.
‘‘You can see all the hard work and determination that goes into their performances.
‘‘The show reflects how Stage Challenge is a great pathway for youth to creatively express themselves and their values.’’
It also offers the platform for students to develop self-belief, confidence and resilience.
