Lifters power to records
Janne Barrett lifted three New Zealand records in one day - literally.
The Whangarei powerlifter, who is in the master 60-69 category and competes in the 72kg class, was the only Northlander to claim NZ records at the North Island Powerlifting Championships in June.
Her bench press of 52.5kg and deadlift of 117.5kg both broke the record and the two lift weights combined with her squat weight gave her a New Zealand record total of 252.5kgs.
She also claimed the master women 60-69 best lifter award with 366 points.
Her daughter, Whangarei resident Katrina Barrett, competed in the open category in the over 84kg class and broke four Northland records. Her squat of 157.5 kg, bench press of 90kg, deadlift of 155kg and overall total of 402.5kg all surpassed the previous mark for her category.
The competition, which was held at the ASB Table Tennis Centre on June 18, saw 12 New Zealand and 27 Northland records broken in one day.
Lifters came from Central Districts, Waikato and Auckland to compete.
In the 72kg class, Jade Isbister took out the junior women compe- tition, picking up Northland records in the squat, deadlift and overall total.
Margaret Lindsay broke the same Northland records, but in the masters 50-59 category in the 63kg class.
In the 84kg class, master 40-49 lifter Leanne Cameron claimed records for her squat, deadlift and overall total.
Isbister, Lindsay and Cameron all picked up best lifter awards.
Both Lorraine Wilson and Tony Urlich picked up a record each for their bench press efforts in the master 50-59 category in the over 84kg and equipped 93kg classes respectively.
In the 66kg class, Billy Bodle finished second in the master 50-59 category, but claimed Northland records for his squat, bench press and total.
Josh Edmonds was first in the sub junior men category for the 93kg class, and broke the squat, deadlift and total records. His 346 points saw him named best sub junior men lifter.
Lee Abbott won the open category in the 105kg class with records in the squat, deadlift and total.
A number of other Northland lifters placed in their classes.
