Student excels at uni level

- BAYLEY MOOR

An A plus grade in mathematics at university level has been achieved by Year 13 student Taiyo Serge.

Serge was presented with a Certificate of Merit from the University of Auckland after his achievements for semester one.

The Springbank School student achieved the significant result while completing his other school subjects.

He says the university subject required at least six hours of study a week, all in his own time and on top of his other school commitments.

Serge says he managed the extra work with difficulty.

‘‘I didn’t have much free time, but it is worth it when you get that kind of result.

‘‘It was pretty awesome, I wasn’t expecting it to be that good.’’

The 17-year-old also managed to fit in athletics in the summer and hockey, which includes two games a week and training sessions.

He has not signed on for any university study for semester two.

The University of Auckland Mathematics Department has extended a special invitation for Serge to study the subject further.

Serge says he is considering studying either mathematics or engineering at the university next year.

This most recent achievement follows on from an A plus result of 94 per cent in Cambridge A Level Mathematics in his year 12 academic year.
