SCHOOL TRIP
Scientists are in Kaitaia are leading another hands-on science camp for intermediate-age students after last year’s successful inaugural event. Called a GeoCamp, it is a 10-day fieldbased learning experience for about 30 students and their teachers from six schools in the Far North. This year’s event runs from May 8 to 19. Organised by Crown Research Institute GNS Science, GeoCamps it involves a mix of classroom activities and field sessions. Field trips are planned to places such as
Karikari Peninsula, Ninety Mile Beach, Herekino Forest and Houhora. Lead organiser Kyle Bland says the aim was to create an environment as close to doing ‘real science’ as possible so students could experience the power of discovery for themselves.
