Deserving carers get free dental treatment

- STAFF REPORTER

Carers in Northland received a bit of pampering during Lumino Day on May 6.

Over 400 family carers from around New Zealand benefited from this year’s Lumino Day, which provided free dental treatment for members of Carers NZ, the national body that provides information, advice, learning and support to family carers around the country.

Lumino Kerikeri was one of 30 practices from Kaitaia to Invercargill which provided exams, fillings, tooth extractions and hygiene appointments to people who provide care to a family member due to illness, old age or disability.

The Kerikeri practice helped 34 patients and gave away more than $10,000 worth of treatment.

‘‘Family carers are people who give a lot of their time and them- selves to assist a friend or family member who has extra needs due to illness, old age or disabilities,’’ says Carers NZ general manager Carl Sunderland.

‘‘Many carers have had to stop paid work due to the time required to look after the person they are caring for. Self-care, such as taking time out to see a dentist and look after themselves, is a luxury for many family carers.’’

Lumino West Coast Dental in Kaitaia provided free dental treatment to nine family carers.

Practice manager Claire Mudie says her highlight was giving back to members of Te Amohaere Rudolph’s family, who died recently from cancer.

‘‘She was a pillar of the community, really sweet, and was in the news as she made such an impact.

‘‘It was our privilege to see them and literally made our Lumino day.’’
