Northland Kauri comp for photographers starts
A Northland only, online photography competition initiated by the Kauri Museum at Matakohe aims to highlight the die-back disease threat to kauri trees.
With only four per cent of New Zealand’s ancient forests remaining and facing the threat of kauri dieback disease, the competition is part of the museum’s ongoing support of the ‘Keep Kauri Standing’ programme.
The museum has a collection of over 1200 images gifted by acclaimed New Zealand photographer, Tudor Washington Collins. Collins is perhaps best known for his work as the ‘kauri cameraman’ capturing the glory and grandeur of standing kauri while also documenting the loss of the forests through the timber and gum industries.
Chief executive officer Lisa Tolich says, ‘‘we have chosen the theme of ‘All Things Kauri’ to highlight the importance and diversity of kauri through the modern camera lens’’.
The competition has three categories, primary school student, secondary school student and open.
Tolich says as long as the entry is based on a photographic image, the work can take any form.
