Cuba breakthrough a welcome change

- BRIAN COLLINS Aro Valley

Some readers will be old enough to remember where they were when nuclear war almost resulted between John F Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev, over the Bay of Pigs in 1962.

Cuba was involved as Russia intended to install nuclear missiles on that island.

So the thawing of relations between the USA and Cuba is to be applauded (Editorial, December 22).

Obviously Fidel Castro’s younger brother Raul is now making giant strides towards normalising relations with President Barack Obama.

It is to be hoped that the poor people of Cuba reap some financial benefit, although Cuba will remain a dictatorship.

In the meantime, on a lighter note the world can now enjoy Cuba’s world famous hand-rolled cigars.

These were something Sir Winston Churchill could never do without, and was seldom seen in public unless he had one lit, between his lips.
