Monica the cow’s pub up for sale

- CHLOE WINTER

The year is 1982.

Two men walk into a country pub in southern Taranaki, cow in tow.

They order three pints - one for each of them and one for Monica the cow.

The barmaid refuses to serve the thirsty cow and not just because she’s a cow, or that she’s underage, but because the barmaid was worried about the state she would leave the carpet in.

So as Monica stands in silence and the men finish the last of their pints, a local farmer walks over to Monica and squirts milk straight from her udder into his whiskey.

The ‘no bull’ incident – and the resulting cocktail of whiskey and milk – are still talked about in the pub today.

And it is that very pub which is now up for sale.

Standing for more than 100 years, the land, building and Kaponga Hotel business in southern Taranaki - which has recently been refurbished - has been put on the market.

The building sits on a 2023 square metre site, and includes a bar, accommodation, function rooms, and gaming machine operations.
