Road rage speedster careers to ugly fight

- MATT STEWART

Two men are in hospital after a man seen driving at dangerously high speeds through downtown Wellington allegedly assaulted the man who complained about his driving.

A witness described seeing a man in a red Mini driving down Willis St about 4.30pm yesterday at

speeds of ’’about 120kmh’’ and almost hitting people and cars.

‘‘Finally he stopped, and the courier driver he almost hit chased the car and took his keys. The bad guy chased the courier driver into a building, beat him up, then jumped from the second floor and broke what appeared to be both his legs.’’

‘‘The bad guy crawled out on to Customhouse Quay where we had to restrain him until the police arrived.’’

The man appeared to be on drugs, and was calling out to his partner who was on the scene, she said.

Another witness, Jack Price, was crossing on the green man in Willis St when the car came within a metre of hitting him.

‘‘He almost killed me, I swear to God, I reckon he was going about 80kmh,’’ Price said. Another witness said it was very lucky that noone was killed.

‘‘I’ve never seen anything so dangerous. Crazy driving with people having to jump out of the way.’’

Police confirmed the man was in a small red car, driving the wrong way up Willis St.

Several pedestrians had to move out of the way to avoid being hit as he went through red lights.

The speedster - who faces multiple charges - was stopped on Customhouse Quay and confronted by a man about his driving - he then followed the man into a building and the alleged assault took place.

Police arrived to find the alleged offender with injuries. He is under police supervision in hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

The other man was taken to hospital for observation.
