Nikki Kaye returning despite cancer fight

- SAM SACHDEVA

National MP Nikki Kaye will resume ‘‘full duties’’ in Parliament early next year and run for Auckland Central, as she continues to battle breast cancer.

Kaye, who announced in September that she would take leave from her ministerial portfolios to undergo treatment, was among National MPs who gathered yesterday to discuss the battle to replace retiring Prime Minister John Key.

‘‘I want to be here to participate in the process,’’ Kaye said. ‘‘I’m still getting some treatment but my plan is to be back early next year to resume full duties.’’

It was up to the next prime minister whether Kaye would remain in Cabinet, but she confirmed she would run again in her Auckland Central seat at the 2017 election.

On the verge of tears, Kaye offered praise for Key and all he had done to help her during her recovery.

‘‘I don’t want to cry, but he has been an incredible rock during this period. So has, obviously, the deputy prime minister [Bill English] and the caucus …

‘‘[Key’s] just been the most incredible person and he’s been a great friend, but also he’s just given me so much space to be able to get well.’’

She was ‘‘gutted’’ to hear of Key’s resignation but said the National Party was ‘‘incredibly strong’’ and could appoint a suitable replacement.

‘‘While I’m gutted for him personally, I’m delighted that Bronagh, and Stephie and Max, are going to have their dad back.’’

Kaye said she would give her backing for the leadership to English, who yesterday announced he would seek the top job.
