Auckland start with clean sweeps

Auckland have come out firing on the opening day’s play of the Toro Women’s Interprovi­ncial golf tournament in New Plymouth, picking up two 5-0 wins.

Led by young star Rose Zheng, Auckland powered their way past Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay in round one, before repeating the dose against Aorangi in round two.

Bay of Plenty and Canterbury have also made flying starts to the tournament in, taking convincing wins in round two. Both teams had the first-round bye.

Facing a Tasman team coming into round two on the back of a 3-2 loss to Northland, Bay of Plenty showed their classas each member cruised to victory to give the side a 5-0 win.

Canterbury showed similar form as they handled an Otago team looking to bounce back from a close loss to Aorangi in round one.

Although Otago’s No 5 Susan Grieg scored a 1up win for her side against Jasmine Rou, Canterbury claimed the other four matches to run away with a 4 and 1 win, with No4 Catherine Bell powering her way to a 9 and 7 win.

Manawatu-Wanganui were able to make amends for a firstround loss to Wellington in their second round, fighting to a 31⁄2/-11⁄2 win over Northland, while Auckland swept Aorangi 5-0, Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay beat Southland 3-2 and Wellington fought of a spirited Taranaki side 4-1.

The tournament, which is being held at Westown Golf Club, runs through to Saturday.
