Delay on broadband queried as ‘cynical’

- TOM PULLAR-STRECKER

The Green Party says it is concerned the Government may be holding back a project worth up to $210 million to increase the reach of the ultra-fast broadband network so it will help National’s chances at the next election.

Crown Fibre Holdings, which is managing the Government’s investment in the ultra-fast broadband network, had originally expected to award contracts by the end of June to extend the network to about another 100,000 to 200,000 homes and businesses.

A spokesman for former communications minister Amy Adams said in October that contracts were expected to be in place by the end of last year, but that target has also been missed with no new timeframe announced.

Green Party MP Gareth Hughes said Communications Minister Simon Bridges should explain the delay.

‘‘National promised more urban and rural broadband at the last election but two years later has failed to deliver,’’ he said.

‘‘The minister needs to explain what the hold-up is and when the contracts can be expected.

‘‘It looks like either the Government is stuffing around, cynically waiting to announce during the election or it’s allowing telco companies to create delays and complicate the process.’’

A spokesman for Bridges said contracts for UFB2 were being finalised and an announcement would be made in due course.
