Change in the NYT newsroom
The New York Times has released an internal report that recommends the company expands its training for reporters and editors, and hires journalists with more varied skills. The report was compiled by a group of seven NYT journalists, who were asked by executive editor Dean Baquet to determine a blueprint for the company’s future. Proposals included deepening engagement with readers as a way to build loyalty and attract subscriptions, reducing duplication of article editing, and having visual experts play ‘‘the primary role covering some stories, rather than a secondary role’’, the newspaper reported. The report also called for greater efforts on diversity in the newsroom. Baquet and NYT managing editor Joe Kahn endorsed the recommendations while also addressing the need for downsizing, saying that moving away from ‘‘lowvalue line editing’’ would lead to a reduction in editorial staff numbers.
